Event Report >> Careers Fayre 2009

The SCRUBS Surgical Careers fayre held in March 2009 was a huge success. The aim of the fayre was to provide good, honest, practical advice to all students from budding surgeons to those who are simply interested in a surgical career.

We were delighted to have two fantastic speakers for the fayre. The evening kicked off with Ms Tierney, a general surgeon from Derby who gave a very insightful and entertaining talk on the subject "What makes a good surgeon?". The second talk of the evening had a very practical tone which many students could identify with. It was entitled "From Medical Student to Surgical Trainee". This talk was given by Mr Nick Baylem, a surgical trainee and was very well received.

A highlight of the evening were the stalls where students have the opportunity to gain from the combined experience of the many consultants and registrars who very kindly gave their time to help. We had a number of stalls ranging from surgery in the armed forces, to Neurosurgery, to Urology and many more in between.

By speaking to the consultants and trainees, students were able to gain a true insight into the challenges and rewards of life as a surgeon, how to put themselves forward for a career in surgery. Students were also able to develop contacts for the future.

SCRUBS would like to thank all the consultants, trainees and sponsors and students who helped to make the fayre a success.
